Interstate 5 connects it to major cities to the north and south. Woodburn is part of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the third-most populous metropolitan area after Salem and Keizer. Originally the home of the Calapooia Indians, Woodburn was settled as part of the Oregon Territory. Nearby cities include, Gervais, Hubbard, Donald, Mount Angel, and St. Benedict.

Thirty miles south of Portland, Woodburn is widely known for the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm, the Woodburn Premium Outlets and its friendly farming community that is the capital of Latinx culture in Oregon.
